The Fox and the Goat

A Fox fell into a deep well and could not find a way to get out. A thirsty Goat, coming to drink at the same well, saw the Fox. “Friend Fox,” the Goat said in surprise, “what are you doing down there?”

The Fox thought it best to conceal his unhappy plight. “Ah,” he replied, “I could not resist this excellent water. You have never tasted such fresh, clear water in all your life. I had intended to drink it up myself, but since you are a friend I will save some for you.”

The Goat was so very thirsty that he jumped into the well without a second thought. Then the Fox, just as quickly, leaped upon the Goat’s back. Holding on to her long horns, he was able to reach the top of the well safely.

“Wait!” cried the Goat. “Help me out, too.”

The Fox called down, “If you had as many brains in your head as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have jumped in the well. You’ll have to find your own way out!”

Look before you leap.
